Joker (2019) Review

Image
It goes without saying that when it comes to comic book villains, the Joker reigns above many. Through several decades, the Joker has lept from the comic pages and brought to life on film and television by some very talented people. My personal favorite version of the character is by Heath Ledger, but I have a soft spot for Jack Nicholson and Mark Hamill. So how do you do a Joker movie without Batman involved? The Joker isn't complete without him. Well, Todd Phillips brings a refreshingly different take on the Clown Prince of Crime. Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is a troubled and mentally ill man who has a condition that makes him laugh uncontrollably. He works as a performing clown, though he aspires to be a stand-up comedian. But as society continuously pushes him to the deep end, he brings out a new deadly persona. For starters, the whole look of the movie is dirty and grimy but it's so beautiful in how it's captured. It's definitely reminiscent of Scorcese f...

IT Chapter 2 (2019) Review

Image
IT Chapter 2 takes us 27 years after the first film ended where the now-adult Losers club reunite in Derry, Maine end to IT's reign of terror. I've found the first IT from 2017 decent and a cool. new take on the classic Stephen King novel by placing it in the 80s. It had really good performances from the kid actors and one entertainingly, sinister rendition of Pennywise the Dancing Clown by Bill Skarsgard. So I was looking forward to the sequel based on how it looked from the trailers in that it would seemingly double the scares and the balloons, too. Firstly, some of the adult cast members I thought were perfect fits for their young counterparts. The best examples include James Ransone as Eddie, Isiah Mustafa as Mike, and Bill Hader as Richie who was the standout out of them all. The others ranged from ok to eh, with Jessica Chastain in the latter. As for Bill Skarsgard, he was still enjoyably creepy as Pennywise and owned every scene he was in. For those Stephen King ...

Spider-Man Far From Home (2019) SPOILER Review

Image
Peter Parker returns as he is getting back to his old life after being brought back to life by what's referred to as "The Blip." He and his schoolmates are going on a trip to Europe and he plans to declare his affection to MJ (Zendaya). But all his plans for a nice and romantic trip take a turn when he meets Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal) who claims to be from an alternate universe and is fighting threats that take the form of all the elements: earth, fire, water, and air. Peter joins Beck, who is given the name Mysterio by news stations, along with Nick Fury and Maria Hill, to stop the Elementals from wreaking havoc. While I thought Spider-Man Homecoming was fun, I thought it was lacking a bit in terms of depth. So I was very glad to see that Far From Home added more to Peter's character arc as he's trying to move on from the death of Tony Stark who left him a pair of glasses that contains an AI named E.D.I.T.H. He's also trying to deal with the pressu...

Top 15 Favorite Parts of Avengers Endgame

Image
I really wanted to do a video on this movie, but I keep chickening out and life has been getting in the way for me to the point of exhaustion. For two months, I've been trying to put my thoughts on this movie together in a cohesive and organized way. But it initially seemed so excessive for me to handle for a video review, so I decided to pare it down and ultimately put together a countdown of my favorite parts from Avengers Endgame .  After the events of Infinity War , our surviving heroes reunite with each other and decide to waste no time and go after Thanos. They get the drop on the Titan, only to discover he reduced the Infinity stones to atom form so his work would remain permanent.  In a fit of rage, Thor decapitates Thanos. Well, at least he went for the head this time. We jump to five years later as everyone in the world try to adjust to this new reality. Some haven't taken it well like Hawkeye who lost his entire family and assume the role of a ruthless vigilante...

Captain Marvel (2019) SPOILER Review

Captain Marvel gave us the origin story of Carol Danvers, as well as some surprises and I am gonna look over them in this SPOILER review. Let's start from the beginning and I mean the very beginning when the Marvel Studios logo starts. They changed it to dedicate the one and only Stan Lee. Kevin Feige said that they wanted a small celebration of Stan's legacy that he left behind and I, for one, welcome it. It concludes with the words: "Thank you, Stan." I'm gonna miss him. And for his cameo, while looking for Skrulls, Carol encounters him on a subway where he's reading a script of Mallrats . The two share a smile with each other. It was beautifully well-played. When we first meet Carol, she's referred to as Vers and has all these dreams in her sleep. She then approaches her mentor Yon Rogg (Jude Law) to do some combat training. In this scene, we learn how he teaches her to control her powers with an implant and suppress her emotions. So there was a re...

April 2019 Movies

SHAZAM! - April 5th ANTICIPATION LEVEL: EXCITED The first DC movie of '19 centers around a young orphan named Billy Batson who is granted amazing powers by a wizard. With the utterance of one word, "SHAZAM!" he is turned into an adult superhero. This hero back then was called Captain Marvel before Marvel took ownership of the title for their own hero. But even taking that out, this movie, despite looking like a superhero version of Big , looks like a ton of fun! For those who are tired of DC movies trying to be dark and serious, this feels like a breath of fresh air, going for its own distinct tone, much like Aquaman bringing in colorful visuals and epicness. Seems like DC and Warner Bros. have learned their lesson. Zachary Levi might be the Superman that I wanted but never got with Henry Cavill. I have nothing against Cavill as a person, but his whole portrayal with him acting all serious just never did it for me. And when he does some saving, it seems like he's...

March Movies

Image
This is a new feature where I'll be talking about the movies I'm excited or curious about on a monthly basis. CAPTAIN MARVEL - March 8th ANTICIPATION LEVEL: EXCITED This is it. Marvel's first feature of 2019! As some of you know, I am an MCU fanatic so I look forward to every movie they release. And the fact that this is their first female-led superhero film is another reason why I look forward to it.  For the record, I decided that I will abstain myself from watching any trailers or promos for all the upcoming releases from Marvel Studios. I'm doing this because I've seen trailers that looked awesome but the movies turned out to be disappointing. Examples include Age of Ultron and Thor The Dark World . Perhaps it's a good thing I've been avoiding the trailers because people aren't that impressed by the marketing. There's a backlash against this movie for several reasons from Brie Larson's acting to her comments about more inclusion for h...

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019) Review

Image
Our favorite LEGO characters return in the aptly titled "second part" of The LEGO Movie . It picks up where the first one left off where these unusual beings from the planet DUPLO lay waste to Bricksburg turning it into a Mad Max wasteland. Everyone such as Wyldstyle/Lucy has become bitter while Emmet remains a naive optimist, kinda like me. Just then, a newcomer named General Mayhem kidnaps Lucy and others, so Emmet goes on a rescue mission. Along the way, he encounters this action-loving, thrill-seeking man named Rex Dangervest, who's also voiced by Chris Pratt, in a satire of his status as an action movie star. I've found the first LEGO movie to be a surprising and clever flick that was better than it had any right to be, thanks to Phil Lord and Christopher Miller who are proving to be a very creative duo. And while they're credited as the screenwriters to the sequel, they have Mike Mitchell as the director whose directing credits include Shrek Forever Aft...

Glass (2019) Review

Image
In 2000, M. Night Shyamalan's follow-up to his huge hit, The Sixth Sense , called  Unbreakable was released to a mixed reception but has since grown a little cult following. Fast forward to 2016 where he releases Split which was considered a return to form for him. However, people's minds were blown when it was revealed to be in the same universe as Unbreakable . Thus a trilogy was born by bringing together these two seemingly standalone movies and one anticipated movie to tie it all up. David Dunn (The Overseer) and Kevin Wendell Crumb (The Horde) are placed in a mental institution which contains Elijah Price (Mr.Glass), too. A doctor named Ellie Staple attempts to dissolve their "delusions" that they have superpowers, and what they achieved and survived was just a bunch of lucky coincidences. For years, Mr. Glass has been acting lifeless until he becomes intrigued by Kevin, but mostly The Beast. They team together and challenge David in a supposedly epic battl...

Top 10 Worst Movies of 2018

Image
And now, we come to the worst movies of 2018. In 2017, I would have counted 5 movies as the worst I've seen ( The Emoji Movie being number one), but since I had Moviepass and then AMC A-List, I got to see a lot more movies in '18. Even then, I tried adding some critically panned movies in my Netflix queue in my search for the worst, but I think I've compiled enough for my list. No, I didn't see Fifty Shades Freed . I didn't want to see it, I didn't want to support it in any way, I'm glad it's over, so let's get going. 10. Vox Lux My pick for most pretentious movie of 2018. It follows a girl named Celeste who went through some terrible circumstances and became a pop star in her adulthood. I thought it might have some potential, especially with Natalie Portman in the lead. This could have been like Black Swan 2 . But the themes and presentation of it all were so heavy-handed. It insists upon itself with the violent imagery and dramatic Willem Da...

Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2018

Image
Well, 2018 is over so it's time to reflect on the best movies it had to offer. Personally, some movies that I was really looking forward to didn't quite live up to my expectations like last year, but that doesn't mean there aren't some good ones this year and some were totally worth it. Now I'm going to arrange my picks in alphabetical order because I often have second thoughts of where I would rank a movie. Like on my best of 2017 video, I would put Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Lady Bird in my top 5, instead of the places where I initially put them. Avengers Infinity War I figured we would start with the biggest movie of 2018. After 10 years of establishing characters we love and a stirring cinematic universe, Marvel Studios brings us a super epic and harrowing challenge for our large cast of heroes to go against Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet. The anticipation and hype for this film could not be overstated, especially from me. And it wa...
