March Movies
This is a new feature where I'll be talking about the movies I'm excited or curious about on a monthly basis.
CAPTAIN MARVEL - March 8th
ANTICIPATION LEVEL: EXCITED
This is it. Marvel's first feature of 2019! As some of you know, I am an MCU fanatic so I look forward to every movie they release. And the fact that this is their first female-led superhero film is another reason why I look forward to it. For the record, I decided that I will abstain myself from watching any trailers or promos for all the upcoming releases from Marvel Studios. I'm doing this because I've seen trailers that looked awesome but the movies turned out to be disappointing. Examples include Age of Ultron and Thor The Dark World. Perhaps it's a good thing I've been avoiding the trailers because people aren't that impressed by the marketing. There's a backlash against this movie for several reasons from Brie Larson's acting to her comments about more inclusion for her press tour. I get so peeved whenever there's a movie I'm looking forward to, someone has to raise a huge stink about something. It seems like nowadays whenever there's a comic book movie centering around a woman or a POC, there's a very vocal minority who has to say countless times how "it wasn't that great." Now people are capitalizing on Brie Larson's comments, saying she hates white males and she's going to destroy the MCU with her SJW agenda.
As for me, I'm going to give the film the benefit of the doubt. I believe there's a reason behind Larson's acting for her character. Heck, I've seen images from promos that show her smiling! So all these criticisms and memes centering on the notion that she doesn't smile or show any emotion I think is irrelevant. As for her comments for more diversity, my response are these words from Star-Lord: "What's wrong with that?" I feel she wants more diverse people to have the golden opportunities to interview her and the other MCU celebrities. I'm sure they would love it, Guys, it's fine if you don't want to see this movie, but you don't need to protect your manhood by bashing it. Males are so sensitive.
APOLLO 11 - March 15th
ANTICIPATION LEVEL: CURIOUS
This documentary on the historical event of landing a man on the moon has been made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of it. I heard that it uses archival footage in 70mm of the whole event and it would be shown on IMAX. I hope I get to see it in an IMAX theater near me. Not long before, we've had the movie First Man centering on the event, and even though I enjoyed it, some people didn't because of its tone, length, and lack of flag planting. So maybe this movie would paint a better picture of this whole event and what it means. Either way, I'm all for it.
US - March 22nd
ANTICIPATION LEVEL: EXCITED AND TERRIFIED.
Jordan Peele's long-awaited follow-up to his directorial debut, Get Out, is near us. In his second film, a family goes on vacation but their time out takes a terrifying turn when these mysterious, savage doppelgangers of themselves appear and try to kill them. The trailer was pretty intense, but I believe Peele will not use any cheap jump scares, at least use them effectively. The mystery of this film is very intriguing. I feel like it has to do with cloning since there's a lab with a bunch of rabbits. Who knows? Maybe it will be something unexpected and mind-blowing. I don't want to think too much on this since I watched Get Out without knowing a whole bunch and it added to the experience.
DUMBO - March 29th
ANTICIPATION LEVEL: CURIOUS
The first of three live-action remakes that Disney is releasing. From the trailers, it looks visually interesting, Dumbo looks very cute, and I feel like Tim Burton is a good choice to direct it. It almost has the look and feel of his film, Big Fish. I don't know if the focus on the human characters or anything else would work, but as I said before, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. Plus it's cool to see Michael Keaton working with Burton again after 27 years. I think a Batman and Penguin reunion will be worth it.
